Chapter 18

Unfortunately Iris McClechan wasn’t dead yet, but her husband John was, and he had settled into a private hell that consisted of a boiling lava pool. In all my journeys in hell, I hadn’t yet seen anything quite like I did with McClechan as he lay in the middle of this pool screaming in anguish, his flesh bubbling off him while new flesh simultaneously regenerated. There was nothing I could do to get information out of him. Even though he was staring straight at me I doubt he knew I was there, or could hear what I was saying. It was too bad. I was hoping he could give me names of other friends Ruby might’ve had since Dickie Rascine wasn’t dead yet.

Even though I couldn’t find Dickie Rascine in the directories, I found pages of other Rascines, and my palms itched when I went through them and saw an entry for a Brad Rascine. It made me think that Eloise might’ve had the name wrong—that Rascine might’ve used the name Dickie as a nickname, but that his real name had been Brad. The problem was I didn’t get that strong gut feeling I always got when I knew I had the soul I was looking for, but still, I couldn’t ignore the way my palms itched. The address for this Rascine’s portal was all the way out in Brookhaven on Long Island, which was a haul and a half, but I decided I needed to check it out.
